Job Overview/Summary:
The Senior Category Manager reports to the Vice President of Meat/Deli/Bakery and is responsible for managing specific assigned categories within the department. This role includes leading and supervising select Category Managers and Replenishment Buyers. The Senior Category Manager ensures all facets of the business within the assigned categories are managed efficiently to achieve company sales and profitability goals.
Responsibilities:
- Negotiate with vendors on cost of goods, promotional funds, rebates, and payment terms while adhering to corporate guidelines
- Lead major category reviews and analyses, ensuring cross-departmental communication with space management, marketing, operations, and merchandising teams
- Analyze market data from IRI, Nielsen, and other sources to maintain awareness of market trends
- Monitor competitive situations for key items and react proactively as necessary
- Evaluate new product presentations and make decisions on product selection
- Determine products for advertising and in-store promotions
- Use category management practices to analyze product profitability, selection, display, and assortment
- Analyze internal and external data, making data-driven decisions and recommendations to management
- Collaborate with corporate brands to develop private label product lines
- Work with Replenishment Buyers to manage inventory, service levels, order cycles, and supply chain practices
- Set and monitor sales and margin plans for assigned categories to meet personal and company goals
- Conduct on-site visits to audit competitive product displays, selection, and pricing
- Collaborate with merchandising and pricing departments to optimize sales and profitability in assigned categories
Primary Skills:
- Strong negotiation skills with experience in vendor management
- Expertise in category management, including market trend analysis and competitive monitoring
- Proficient in using market data sources such as IRI and Nielsen
- Strong analytical abilities to interpret data and make strategic decisions
- Knowledge of supply chain management, including inventory and replenishment processes
- Ability to lead cross-functional teams and ensure communication across departments
Secondary Skills (Good to Have):
- Experience in private label product development
- Familiarity with merchandising and pricing strategies
- Strong communication and leadership skills
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in category management, especially within the Meat/Deli/Bakery sector
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Strong analytical and negotiation skills, with experience using data to drive decision-making
