Job Overview/Summary:
The Ophthalmic Technician supports ophthalmologists by performing a variety of diagnostic tests and procedures to assist in the evaluation and treatment of patients with eye conditions. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with patients and healthcare professionals.
Responsibilities:
Administer standard ophthalmic tests per physician orders and according to established procedures and standards
Perform diagnostic tests, including visual field testing
Conduct retinoscopy and assist in evaluating refractive errors
Evaluate patients with eye muscle problems using prisms
Perform contact lens fitting and dispensing
Explain procedures to patients and/or families and guide them during treatment and therapy
Instruct patients and/or families on appropriate home care and treatment plans
Prepare reports, complete charting, and maintain accurate patient records
Confer regularly with physicians regarding patient progress
Collaborate effectively with coworkers, physicians, children, and families
Represent the organization professionally and promote a positive image of its services
Primary Skills:
Ophthalmic testing and diagnostic procedures
Retinoscopy and visual field testing
Contact lens fitting and dispensing
Patient education and communication
Medical documentation and charting
Secondary Skills (Good to Have):
Pediatric patient interaction
Knowledge of eye muscle evaluations and prism use
Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
Qualifications:
Knowledge of basic eye anatomy and physiology, ophthalmic tests, and procedures
Completion of a two-year ophthalmic technician program or equivalent ophthalmic experience
Current CPR certification – Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers through American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or National Safety Council
