Job Overview/Summary:
The Oncology Nurse Specialist provides expert nursing care, education, and leadership within the oncology department. This role supports the clinical team, ensures adherence to quality standards, and fosters the professional growth of staff to enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction.
Responsibilities:
A day in the life of an Oncology Nurse Specialist:

Provides patient care, applying advanced clinical skills and critical thinking to ensure optimal outcomes of clinical outcomes.

Provides support and acts as a clinical resource for staff; monitors clinical practice to ensure compliance with established standards.

Supports the assessment of appropriate patient care through assessment, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of the delivery of patient care.

Collaborates with Directors of Nursing, Nurse Managers, and Nurse Educators in assessing the educational needs of staff and developing professional goals.

Plans and implements educational programs.

Coaches staff in professional development and assists in the performance appraisal and competency assessment process.

Demonstrates professional involvement by participating in workshops, journal clubs, seminars, and grand rounds—fostering review and discussion of current research as a presenter or member.

May act as a preceptor to graduate students.

Performs other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Adheres to organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Primary Skills:

Advanced clinical assessment and patient care skills in oncology nursing

Critical thinking and evidence-based practice proficiency
Secondary Skills (Good to Have):

Experience as a clinical educator or preceptor

Familiarity with quality improvement initiatives and staff development programs
Qualifications:
-
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
-
Currently enrolled in a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program

Minimum of 2 years’ experience in oncology nursing

Current valid NJ State Professional Registered Nurse license

Certification in the area of clinical practice

Maintains American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Compliance Professional (HCP) certification

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Proficient in Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms

Preferred: Master’s degree in Nursing and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
