Job Overview/Summary:

The RN Bed Management Nurse is responsible for assessing, coordinating, and optimizing patient bed placement across the facility. This role leverages clinical judgment, communication skills, and operational awareness to ensure efficient utilization of bed resources and promote seamless patient flow.

Responsibilities:

  • Utilize clinical expertise to assess and prioritize patient bed placement and transfers based on urgency and bed availability.

  • Plan, prioritize, and direct patient placement requests by evaluating pending discharges, transfers, and open beds.

  • Communicate with medical staff, clinical teams, and operational units to facilitate timely and appropriate placement.

  • Escalate barriers to patient flow through established chain of command.

  • Maintain service-level commitments by handling placement calls in a timely manner.

  • Adhere to standards of practice, policies, and procedures.

  • Demonstrate competence in EPIC applications related to Bed Management.

  • Delegate tasks as needed to support patient placement workflows.

  • Collaborate with administration to resolve issues related to census fluctuations and bed shortages.

  • Demonstrate leadership within the professional practice environment, including mentoring peers and assisting with staff orientation.

  • Stay updated on healthcare trends impacting patient placement decisions.

  • Complete annual self-appraisal with professional goals and participate in peer reviews.

  • Actively participate in performance improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and outcomes.

Primary Skills:

  • Strong clinical assessment and decision-making abilities

  • Proficiency with EPIC or other clinical documentation systems

  • Effective communication and collaboration skills

  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment

  • Knowledge of patient flow and hospital operations

Secondary Skills (Good to Have):

  • Leadership experience

  • Experience in process improvement initiatives

  • Training or mentorship experience

Qualifications:

Required: Associate's Degree – Graduate of an accredited school of nursing

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree (BSN or higher)

Experience: Minimum 3 years of relevant acute hospital nursing experience (inpatient adult, pediatrics, critical care, ED, or urgent care)

Licensure: Active Registered Nurse (RN) – State of Michigan (required upon hire)
