Job Title: Licensed Veterinary Technician

Job Overview/Summary:

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Licensed Veterinary Technician to provide high-quality medical and surgical nursing care in a fast-paced veterinary and shelter medicine environment. The ideal candidate will work independently under the supervision of a licensed Veterinarian (DVM), supporting critical care, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) surgeries, infectious disease treatment, and overall patient wellbeing. This role requires strong technical expertise, leadership ability, and a compassionate approach to animal care.

Responsibilities:

Work independently to provide proper medical care as assigned by a Veterinarian (DVM)

Provide daily nursing care for clinic inpatients, shelter/foster animals, surgical patients, and public patients

Obtain diagnostics including digital radiography and positioning, phlebotomy, and in-house laboratory processing

Lead the flow and function of HQHVSN surgeries supporting 20–50 patients daily per DVM

Perform anesthetic induction, monitoring, and surgical recovery

Conduct accurate drug calculations and maintain precise surgical records

Prepare patients for soft tissue and orthopedic surgical procedures

Obtain dental radiographs and perform dental prophylaxis independently

Place and maintain IV catheters

Administer medications, vaccinations, and treatments

Fill prescriptions accurately

Assist with euthanasia and perform euthanasia if certified

Respond appropriately during medical emergencies and maintain CPR competency

Treat infectious diseases including Ringworm, Upper Respiratory Infection, Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease, Panleukopenia, and Parvovirus

Perform animal husbandry duties including cleaning, feeding, watering, medicating, and monitoring animals

Assist with intake and discharge of patients, communicating clearly and compassionately

Collaborate with volunteers and assist in training and mentoring staff

Ensure adherence to organizational policies, safety standards, and standard operating procedures

Report health, behavioral, safety, or security concerns promptly

Communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and the public

Demonstrate leadership and collaborative teamwork within Veterinary Services

Primary Skills:

Anesthesia induction, monitoring, and recovery

Surgical preparation and assistance (soft tissue and orthopedic)

Dental radiography and prophylaxis

IV catheter placement and maintenance

Phlebotomy and laboratory diagnostics

Infectious disease management

High-volume surgical workflow management

Emergency response and CPR proficiency

Safe animal handling and restraint

Secondary Skills (Good to Have):

Experience in shelter medicine or animal welfare

Low-stress animal handling techniques

Leadership, mentoring, and volunteer coordination

Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email, and internet-based systems

Strong organizational and time management skills

Qualifications:

Must hold a Veterinary Technician license in the state of Washington or have the ability to transfer from another state

Certified for euthanasia under Washington State regulations or willing to obtain certification

Experience in a veterinary clinic or animal welfare setting preferred

Ability to handle large volumes of dogs and cats daily

Proficient in safe handling of fractious or feral animals and use of appropriate safety equipment

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations for accurate drug dosing

Demonstrated ability to recognize limitations and seek assistance when needed
