Job Overview/Summary:
The Healthy Steps Specialist plays a critical role in supporting early childhood development, maternal mental health, and family wellness. This position provides comprehensive mental health assessments, diagnosis, and treatment planning while partnering with families, healthcare teams, and community programs to promote optimal developmental outcomes for children and caregivers.
Responsibilities:
Clinical Care & World-Class Service

Provide ethical, professional, and timely clinical services to patients and families at approved care sites

Formulate diagnoses for acute and chronic mental health conditions using psychological testing, social histories, interviews, and clinical data

Conduct risk assessments related to self-harm or harm to others

Independently evaluate patient needs and develop individualized care plans

Participate actively in family-centered care and refer patients to specialists and ancillary services as appropriate

Maintain high standards of quality, safety, and clinical documentation

Utilize appropriate chain of command and escalation policies
Advocacy & Community Engagement

Participate in advocacy initiatives that promote population-based pediatric health

Educate patients and families on treatment, prevention, and care enhancement strategies
-
Contribute to health promotion, education, and prevention programs
-
Support scholarly and public policy initiatives advancing child and maternal mental health
Research & Scholarly Activity
-
Engage in collaborative research efforts through Early Childhood Innovation Network (ECIN) and Children’s Advocacy Institute (CHAI)

Participate in manuscript review and publication in peer-reviewed journals

Attend research committees, workshops, and special interest groups
Education & Training

Participate in medical education programs and interdisciplinary learning activities

Supervise, train, and mentor clinical professionals, students, and trainees

Provide timely and constructive feedback to trainees

Ensure appropriate orientation and oversight of trainee-delivered care
Quality, Compliance & Safety

Adhere to bylaws, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements

Complete clinical documentation in compliance with JCAHO and other regulatory standards

Identify service gaps and recommend quality improvement initiatives

Participate in peer review, quality assurance, and error prevention efforts

Anticipate patient and family needs and ensure follow-through until resolution

Primary Skills:

Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Social Work, Clinical Counseling, or a related field (required)

Minimum of three (3) years of experience working with children and families in early childhood development, mental health, and/or maternal mental health (preferred)

Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and professional development

Strong knowledge of legal and ethical standards in mental health service delivery
Required Licenses and Certifications:

Psychologist licensed in Washington, DC (upon hire), OR

Independent Clinical Social Worker licensed in Washington, DC (upon hire), OR

Licensed Professional Counselor licensed in Washington, DC (upon hire)
