Job Title: Environmental Protection Specialist

Job Overview/Summary: We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Environmental Protection Specialist to join our team. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in supporting and managing a variety of environmental programs, with a primary focus on air quality permitting and regulation of direct and indirect air pollutant sources. This intermediate-level position requires expertise in environmental protection and natural resource conservation principles, as well as the ability to interpret and apply District and federal statutes and regulations.

Responsibilities: Manage and support environmental programs, including Underground Storage Tank Management, Hazardous and Solid Waste Management, and Air and Water Quality Protection. Review and evaluate applications for approvals, permits, registrations, certifications, and licenses using established standards and procedures. Assess environmental hazards, conduct site inspections, and develop actionable recommendations. Stay informed of changes in legislation, technical reports, and industry standards to ensure regulatory compliance. Engage with interagency and intergovernmental groups to address environmental issues collaboratively. Conduct public participation activities such as workshops, hearings, and advisory board meetings to communicate departmental policies and initiatives. Provide technical guidance on controlling and mitigating environmental hazards. Perform environmental education and outreach related to fisheries, wildlife resources, and habitat restoration.

Primary Skills: Comprehensive knowledge of environmental protection programs and natural resource conservation practices. Proficiency in interpreting and applying relevant statutes, regulations, and guidelines. Experience with air quality permitting and regulation of pollutant sources. Strong analytical skills for reviewing technical documents and environmental assessments. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with diverse stakeholders.

Secondary Skills (Good to Have): Familiarity with hazardous materials management, such as lead hazard control and asbestos regulations. Experience with air quality and/or traffic modeling. Knowledge of stormwater and flood control programs. Skills in conducting environmental education and outreach initiatives.

Qualifications: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade in the progression. Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field preferred. Demonstrated ability to analyze environmental data and produce actionable insights. Experience with interagency collaboration and public participation activities.
