Job Overview/Summary:
The Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) plays a critical role in emergency response operations by assessing patient conditions, prioritizing care needs, and coordinating appropriate medical interventions. This position requires strong clinical knowledge, effective communication skills, and the ability to operate within established medical protocols to ensure safe and timely patient care.
Responsibilities:
Assess patients with medical conditions and accurately document findings in patient care records.
Prioritize and anticipate patients’ needs while developing and implementing appropriate plans of care.
Perform interventions in accordance with established protocols and document patient responses to treatment.
Conduct ongoing patient evaluations and adjust treatment plans as necessary, ensuring thorough documentation.
Prepare, inspect, and maintain medical equipment and supplies; perform daily equipment checks.
Restock and clean units following each mission to maintain operational readiness.
Utilize radios and communication systems effectively during emergency and non-emergency operations.
Assist with the orientation and training of new EMTs.
Operate required vehicles safely and in compliance with organizational and state regulations.
Participate in staffing and supporting special events as required.
Primary Skills:
Emergency medical assessment and patient care
Knowledge of EMS protocols and procedures
Radio and emergency communication systems
Medical documentation and reporting
Equipment preparation and maintenance
Safe vehicle operation
Secondary Skills (Good to Have):
Training and mentoring of new EMTs
Experience with special event medical staffing
Strong multitasking and decision-making abilities
Ability to remain calm under pressure
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Current EMT certification in the applicable state.
One (1) year of recent experience functioning as an EMT-B providing direct patient care preferred.
Valid Driver’s or Chauffeur’s License required.
Must meet Mercy’s Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, be at least 18 years of age, and be eligible to drive per state law.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within three months of hire.
Acceptable certifications include American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.
