Job Overview/Summary:
The Behavioral Health Nurse provides comprehensive psychiatric nursing care to patients with mental health conditions across inpatient, outpatient, or home health settings. This role involves assessment, care planning, medication administration, patient education, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to support patient recovery, safety, and overall well-being.
Responsibilities:
Perform comprehensive psychiatric and mental health assessments
Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans
Administer medications and monitor therapeutic responses and side effects
Provide patient and family education related to mental health conditions and treatments
Collaborate with psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals
Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
Ensure compliance with clinical standards, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements
Support crisis intervention and therapeutic communication as needed
Primary Skills:
Psychiatric and mental health nursing care

Secondary Skills (Good to Have):
Home health experience
Knowledge of electronic health records (EHR) systems

Qualifications:
Registered Nurse (RN) with a master’s degree with a specialty in psychiatric or mental health nursing and licensed in the state where practicing
Must have nursing experience (recommended within the last 3 years) in an acute treatment unit in a psychiatric hospital, psychiatric home care, psychiatric partial hospitalization program, or other outpatient psychiatric services; or
RN with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and licensed in the state where practicing
Must have 1 year of recent nursing experience (recommended within the last 3 years) in an acute treatment unit in a psychiatric hospital, psychiatric home care, psychiatric partial hospitalization program, or other outpatient psychiatric services; or
RN with a Diploma or Associate degree in nursing and licensed in the state where practicing
Must have 2 years of recent nursing experience (recommended within the last 3 years) in an acute treatment unit in a psychiatric hospital, psychiatric home care, psychiatric partial hospitalization program, or other outpatient psychiatric services
Minimum of 2 years of home health experience preferred
Current CPR certification required
Basic clinical skills
Professional appearance and demeanor
General knowledge of computers and ability to learn industry-specific software applications
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Strong organizational and time management skills with keen attention to detail
Ability to work effectively in a team environment
Ability to develop critical thinking skills, research situations, and solve complex problems
