This guide covers 2026 RBT requirements, supervision rules, pay data, turnover causes, school-based RBT staffing and how to build a lasting pipeline. For the wider market, read our ABA and BCBA staffing workforce report.

Why Hire an RBT (Registered Behavior Technician)?

An RBT is a paraprofessional who delivers ABA (applied behavior analysis) treatment under close supervision. The BCBA writes the plan. Then the RBT carries it out, session by session, and records the data. As a result, RBTs are the engine of most ABA programs.

  • Direct service hours: RBTs deliver treatment by protocol, which is billed under CPT code 97153 in most payer systems.
  • Reliable data: Good RBTs collect clean session data. Therefore, BCBAs can make faster, better plan changes.
  • Consistency for clients: A stable RBT builds trust with the child and family. In turn, sessions run more smoothly.
  • Lower cost per hour: RBTs free BCBAs to focus on assessment, plan design and supervision.
  • Future BCBAs: Many RBTs go on to become BCaBAs or BCBAs. So strong RBT hiring also builds your clinical pipeline.

Types of RBT Roles and Settings

RBT work looks different in each setting. Accordingly, define the setting, schedule and client profile before you start recruiting.

Clinic-Based RBT

Works in a center with set session blocks and on-site supervisors. Therefore, this role suits newer RBTs who need close support.

In-Home and Community RBT

Travels to homes and community sites. Consequently, reliable transport, flexible hours and strong caregiver skills matter most.

School-Based RBT

Supports students in classrooms under a school or contracted BCBA. In addition, the RBT works alongside teachers and follows the student’s IEP (individualized education program).

Telehealth-Supported RBT

Delivers in-person sessions while the BCBA observes or coaches remotely. Meanwhile, this model helps rural programs meet supervision rules.

Lead or Senior RBT

Mentors new hires, models procedures and helps with scheduling. Also, this role is a natural step toward BCaBA or BCBA training.

RBT vs Behavior Technician vs BCaBA vs BCBA

Employers often mix up these titles. However, each one has a different scope. Use this table to pick the right role.

RoleMinimum educationBACB credential?Delivers direct treatment? Can supervise RBTs?
Behavior technician or behavior aide (uncertified)Varies by employerNoYes, where the payer and state allowNo
RBT — Registered Behavior TechnicianHigh school diploma or equivalent, plus 40-hour trainingYesYesNo
BCaBA — Board Certified Assistant Behavior AnalystBachelor’s degree plus supervised fieldworkYesYesYes, under BCBA oversight
BCBA — Board Certified Behavior AnalystMaster’s degree plus supervised fieldworkYesYesYes

Some payers and states require the RBT credential for direct treatment billing. Therefore, check your payer contracts before you hire uncertified technicians. If you need a plan writer or supervisor, see our page on how to hire a BCBA. For broader ABA technician roles, see hire an ABA behavioral therapist.

2026 RBT Requirements: What Changed

The BACB updated RBT rules for 2026. These changes affect how fast you can onboard new staff. So build them into your hiring plan.

Requirement2026 rule

Background checksBackground and abuse-registry checks completed within 180 days of applying
Training40-hour training, completed over at least 5 and no more than 180 days
Competency assessmentInitial Competency Assessment completed within 90 days of applying

SupervisorsFrom January 1, 2026, only a BCBA or BCaBA can supervise an RBT

Sources: BACB RBT Handbook (2026); BACB Upcoming Changes (2026); BACB December 2025 Newsletter.

In 2025, 75% of first-time RBT exam takers passed. So about one in four new candidates needs a retake. Consequently, plan extra time between hire date and first billable session. For the full rules, read the BACB RBT Handbook.

The 5% Supervision Rule and Who Can Supervise RBTs

Every RBT needs ongoing supervision. Each month, supervision must cover at least 5% of the RBT’s service hours. Also, there must be at least two supervision contacts. At least one contact must observe the RBT with a client. In addition, at least one contact must be one-on-one. A group contact can include up to 10 RBTs.

Only BCBAs and BCaBAs From January 1, 2026

Since January 1, 2026, non-certified supervisors can no longer supervise RBTs. Only a BCBA or BCaBA can fill that role. Furthermore, only a BCBA can act as the RBT Requirements Coordinator. As a result, your RBT headcount is now capped by your certified supervisor capacity. See BACB upcoming changes for details.

How Many RBTs Can One BCBA Support?

The BACB sets a minimum, not a fixed ratio. For example, an RBT who works 100 hours a month needs at least 5 hours of supervision. So eight such RBTs need about 40 supervision hours a month from one BCBA. That comes on top of assessments, plan updates and parent training. Therefore, many programs set a lower cap so supervision stays meaningful.

RBT Staffing Models Compared

RBT demand rises and falls with new cases, school terms and staff leave. Therefore, mix staffing models to keep sessions covered.

ModelHow it worksBest for
Permanent (direct hire)You employ the RBT from day oneCore clinic and in-home teams
Contract or temporaryThe RBT works through the agency for a set termLeaves, waitlist surges and new sites
Per-diemRBTs fill shifts as neededAfter-school peaks and cancellations
School-year contractPlacement tied to the district calendarSchool-based RBT staffing
Contract-to-hireStarts as contract, converts to permanentTesting fit before a permanent offer

School Registered Behavior Technician Staffing

Schools often need RBTs to support students with behavior plans. Under the federal IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), schools must provide appropriate supports to eligible students. So many districts add RBTs to special education teams.

School-based RBT staffing has its own needs. For example, RBTs must clear district fingerprinting and child-safety checks. They also need to work well with teachers, aides and related-service staff. In addition, their schedules follow the school calendar, not a clinic calendar.

  • Supervision plan: Decide who supervises: a district BCBA, a contracted BCBA or the staffing partner’s BCBA.
  • Data systems: Agree on how session data reaches the IEP team.
  • Summer and breaks: Plan for extended school year (ESY) services and gaps between terms.
  • Privacy: Train RBTs on FERPA (student records) as well as HIPAA where it applies.
  • Funding: Confirm whether Medicaid school-based services or district funds pay for the role.

Recruiting ABA Therapists: Where to Find RBTs

RBT recruiting needs volume and speed. However, the best hires often come from steady, planned channels.

  • BACB Registry: Verify every candidate on the BACB certificant registry before an offer.
  • Colleges and universities: Psychology, education and social work students often want RBT roles while they study.
  • Train-to-certify programs: Hire motivated people, pay for the 40-hour training, then support the exam.
  • Staff referrals: Your current RBTs know others who fit your culture.
  • Job boards and social media: Good for reach. Nevertheless, screen quickly, because RBT candidates take the first solid offer.
  • An RBT staffing agency: A specialist RBT recruiter can supply pre-screened candidates and cover short-term gaps.

Building an RBT and Support Staff Pipeline

The best staffing agency for RBT and support staff pipeline work does more than fill today’s seat. It helps you build a steady flow of new staff. So think in stages, not single hires.

  1. Forecast: Count expected new cases, authorized hours and planned departures each quarter.
  2. Check supervision capacity: Confirm your BCBAs and BCaBAs can absorb more RBTs under the 5% rule.
  3. Source early: Keep a bench of screened candidates, including people in training.
  4. Train in cohorts: Run the 40-hour training and competency checks in groups to save BCBA time.
  5. Grow from within: Offer a path from RBT to lead RBT, then to BCaBA or BCBA.
  6. Fill gaps with contract RBTs: Use contract staff while permanent hires finish training.

RBT Hiring Challenges (and Practical Solutions)

RBT hiring moves fast, and good candidates disappear quickly. Nonetheless, a few fixes make a big difference.

  • Slow offers: Candidates often accept the first offer. Therefore, interview and decide within days.
  • Uncertified applicants: Many strong people lack the credential. So offer paid training and exam support.
  • Split shifts: After-school demand creates short, scattered hours. Consequently, cluster sessions and offer guaranteed minimum hours.
  • Cancellations: Lost sessions mean lost pay. As a result, consider cancellation pay or backup tasks.
  • Thin supervision: New RBTs leave when they feel alone. Thus, schedule real coaching, not just compliance checks.

RBT Qualifications and Compliance Checklist

Check each item before the first session. Otherwise, you risk billing problems and safety issues.

  • Active RBT certification: Confirm on the BACB registry, not just the resume.
  • Background and abuse-registry checks: Meet BACB timing and your state or district rules.
  • Assigned supervisor: A named BCBA or BCaBA who knows the RBT’s clients.
  • Payer enrollment: Some payers require RBT enrollment or an NPI (national provider identifier) before billing.
  • HIPAA training: Required for anyone handling client information.
  • CPR and first aid: Recommended, especially for school and community roles.
  • Driver’s license and insurance: Needed for in-home and community roles.

RBT Interview Questions (With What You’re Measuring)

  • “Tell me about a session that didn’t go as planned. What did you do?” — Measures calm under pressure and plan fidelity.
  • “How do you record data when a client is having a hard moment?” — Measures data accuracy and safety focus.
  • “What would you do if a parent asked you to change a program?” — Measures role boundaries and communication.
  • “How do you like to get feedback from a supervisor?” — Measures coachability.
  • “What schedule can you commit to for the next six months?” — Measures reliability and fit with your hours.

How to Evaluate RBT Skills

A resume says little about real session skill. Therefore, add a short practical step.

  • Role-play: Ask the candidate to run a short discrete trial with a BCBA acting as the client.
  • Data task: Show a short video clip and ask them to record frequency or duration data.
  • Scenario questions: Test their response to refusal, safety concerns and caregiver requests.

When Should You Hire RBTs?

Hire when authorized hours go unstaffed, waitlists grow or a new site is planned. Also, recruit ahead of the school year and the after-school season. However, only add RBTs your supervisors can support under the 5% rule.

RBT Pay: What the Data Shows

The BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) has no separate job category for RBTs. So use close benchmarks and local market data together.

BenchmarkPayNote
BLS psychiatric technicians and aides, national median (May 2025)$21.68 per hour ($45,100 per year)Closest BLS category; not RBT-specific
Hawaii Medicaid ABA rate study, RBT wage, BLS-based median scenario$23.91 per hourOne state; 2023 study, trended to July 2024
Hawaii Medicaid ABA rate study, RBT provider survey median$25.14 per hourOne state; Hawaii providers only
Hawaii Medicaid ABA rate study, BLS-based 75th percentile scenario$26.34 per hourOne state; higher-wage scenario

Sources: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook (2025); Hawaii Med-QUEST ABA Rate Study, stakeholder meeting 3 (December 2023).

Pay is not just the hourly rate. For example, guaranteed hours, paid drive time, cancellation pay and paid training all change what an RBT actually earns. In addition, the BLS projects 18% job growth for psychiatric technicians and aides from 2025 to 2035. So competition for entry-level behavioral health staff will likely stay strong.

Why RBTs Leave: Turnover Reasons From BACB Data

There is no reliable national RBT turnover rate. However, the BACB surveyed people whose RBT certification lapsed in 2024. Of 30,018 people contacted, 1,386 replied. Their reasons for leaving point to clear fixes.

Reason given for leavingShare of respondents
Low pay57%
Poor treatment by the company44%
Workplace issues42%
Lack of supervisor support41%
Limited growth41%
Hours41%
High client demands38%
Unpredictable schedule38%
Unpredictable pay34%

Source: BACB December 2025 Newsletter (survey of RBTs whose certification lapsed in 2024; 4.6% response rate).

Research backs this up. In one study, 38% of behavior technicians said they were somewhat or highly likely to quit. Satisfaction with supervisor support, training and pay was linked to lower intent to quit, according to a 2019 review in the Review Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

RBT Retention Strategies That Work

The data above points to a simple plan. Fix pay predictability, supervision and growth first.

  • Predictable pay: Offer guaranteed hours or cancellation pay so income does not swing week to week.
  • Real supervision: Use supervision time for coaching and feedback, not just paperwork.
  • Respect and recognition: Thank RBTs by name and act on their feedback.
  • Stable schedules: Keep the same clients and time blocks where you can.
  • Clear career path: Fund coursework toward BCaBA or BCBA and promote from within.
  • Stay interviews: Ask RBTs what would make them stay, before they decide to leave.

RBT Staffing FAQs

What does an RBT staffing agency do?

An RBT staffing agency finds, screens and places Registered Behavior Technicians in ABA clinics, schools and home programs. It checks certification and background clearances before placement. It can also supply contract RBTs to cover short-term gaps.

What are the RBT requirements in 2026?

An RBT must be 18 or older and have a high school diploma or equivalent. They need background checks, a 40-hour training, an Initial Competency Assessment and a passing score on the RBT exam. The exam now follows the 3rd edition outline.

Who can supervise an RBT in 2026?

Since January 1, 2026, only a BCBA or BCaBA can supervise an RBT. Non-certified supervisors are no longer allowed. Only a BCBA can serve as the RBT Requirements Coordinator.

How much supervision does an RBT need?

Supervision must cover at least 5% of the RBT’s service hours each month. There must be at least two contacts a month, with at least one observing a client session and at least one one-on-one.

How much do RBTs earn?

The BLS does not track RBTs separately. Its closest category, psychiatric technicians and aides, had a median of $21.68 an hour in May 2025. Hawaii’s ABA rate study set RBT wage benchmarks of about $24 to $26 an hour.

Why do RBTs leave their jobs?

In a BACB survey of RBTs whose certification lapsed in 2024, 57% named low pay. Many also cited poor treatment, lack of supervisor support, limited growth and hours. Predictable pay and real supervision help most.

Can an agency place uncertified behavior technicians?

Some can, but check your payer and state rules first. Some payers require the RBT credential for direct treatment billing. A good partner will help candidates finish training and certification.

Can schools use an RBT staffing agency?

Yes. Many districts use school registered behavior technician staffing to support students with behavior plans. Agree on supervision, background checks and coverage for school breaks before placement.

How many RBTs can one BCBA supervise?

The BACB sets a minimum supervision amount, not a fixed ratio. The real limit depends on RBT hours, case intensity and the BCBA’s other duties. So set a cap that keeps supervision meaningful.

How can we reduce RBT turnover?

Start with the reasons RBTs give for leaving. Offer predictable pay and hours, strong supervisor support and a clear path to growth. Stay interviews can catch problems early.
