Job Overview/Summary:

We are seeking a detail-oriented and compassionate Laboratory Assistant to support specimen handling, patient interaction, and lab operations. This role plays a vital part in ensuring accurate and timely specimen collection, processing, and delivery while maintaining a positive patient experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Handle, collect, and process laboratory specimens

  • Establish rapport with patients and explain venipuncture procedures

  • Interact professionally with patients of all ages and health conditions

  • Perform reception duties in the lab front office

  • Conduct venipunctures and capillary collections from newborn to geriatric patients

  • Order, cancel, collect, receive, process, and distribute specimens efficiently

  • Store specimens correctly for further testing

  • Train new employees and students as needed

  • Maintain lab equipment and supply inventory

  • Adhere to hospital and lab policies including dress code, confidentiality, and continuing education

  • Follow infection control and patient safety best practices per CAP, CLIA, and Joint Commission standards

Primary Skills:

  • Proficiency in venipuncture and capillary collection techniques

  • Knowledge of specimen handling and processing protocols

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with patients and staff

  • Ability to multitask and operate in a fast-paced environment

Secondary Skills (Good to Have):

  • Experience in training or mentoring new staff

  • Front desk/reception experience in a healthcare setting

  • Familiarity with electronic lab and medical records systems

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required)

  • 1–2 years of job-related experience (preferred)

  • Venipuncture experience (required)

  • Phlebotomy certification (preferred)

  • BLS certification (required)
