Job Overview/Summary:
The Palliative Physician provides direct patient care and consultation for patients with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions in inpatient, skilled nursing, and assisted living settings. This role emphasizes symptom management, patient and family counseling, interdisciplinary collaboration, accurate documentation, and a commitment to continuous improvement in serious illness care.
Responsibilities:

Provide direct patient care and consultation, including patient and family counseling and symptom management for life-limiting and life-threatening conditions

Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, and chaplains

Plan patient care and ensure continuity of care throughout treatment

Prepare and maintain accurate patient records, charts, and documents to support sound medical practice and reimbursement

Build effective relationships with hospitalists, other physicians, and referral sources to ensure excellent team follow-up
-
Proactively identify opportunities to innovate in care delivery to improve the patient and caregiver experience for serious illnesses

Assist with developing curricular materials and participate in the education of other medical professionals

Apply principles of medical ethics in the practice of serious illness care and shared decision-making
-
Prescribe medication in accordance with South Carolina statute and professional practice guidelines
-
Manage a caseload in an inpatient setting, completing an average of 15-20 visits per day

Qualifications:

Doctor of Medicine degree or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine degree from an accredited institution

Completion of an accredited United States residency program

Valid and unrestricted license in the State of South Carolina

Valid, unrestricted DEA licensure

Board certification in palliative/hospice medicine
